MORGAN CREEK GOLF CLUB (604) 531-4653
British Columbia Golf Course Review
Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey – just 20 miles from Vancouver, is a Thomas Broom design that was voted the CPGA of BC "Facility of the Year" in 2008. The course played host as a Canadian Open Qualifier in advance of the Canadian Open held at Shaughnessy in 2011. The natural landscape provides visitors with breathtaking views of Mount Baker and Golden Ears Mountain Range. Well conditioned from tee to green, Morgan Creek plays through the lower mainland area, with lush, fairly level fairways and finely manicured green complexes.
There are 5 sets of tee areas that play to slopes and distances measuring 6968 yards/136 slope, 6638 yards/132 slope, 6398 yards/131 slope, 6041 126 slope for men and 140 for women, and 5326 yards with a slope of 127 for ladies hitting from the forward tees. The course is well marked with plaques posted on the fairways at 100 yards and stakes in the 150 yard area on all par fours and fives. Sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and GPS units are mounted on each cart to provide accurate information from tee to pin. Scorecards provide info on the daily pin placements which feature 3 rotating variations.
The facilities include a complete practice area with driving range featuring targeted greens plus tented stalls for inclement weather. There is a large practice green and bunker for sand practice. Golfers will enjoy the clubhouse, which includes a pro shop, restaurant/lounge with wine bar, locker rooms with showers for men and women, plus banquet/outing facilities that can accommodate up to 160 guests.
Sand plays an important role in course strategy, with 62 sand bunkers situated along the layout - a majority positioned around the landing zones off the tee. Pristine water hazards come into play in some shape or form on 15 of the holes, with ponds and lakes providing challenges off the tee and greenside. The well-manicured, rolling fairways offer generous landing areas off the tee, and well positioned bunkers are amenable to long iron shots. Mature trees line most fairways and, although there is a residential community located at the course, houses are just visible but not in play for the most part. Raised green complexes mean tough up and down opportunities. The large greens are well guarded by bunkers and/or water and mounding - rarely leaving flat chips on missed approach shots. Undulations and sloping can lead to very difficult two-putts on quick putting surface (12 on the stimp meter in the summer). It's a good idea to take some time on the practice green before teeing off here.
The beautiful conditions and exciting layout of this course make Morgan Creek an excellent choice for a great round in the Vancouver area. It is highly recommended by TGWG. For more information on Morgan Creek Golf Club and a link to its' website, visit our information page by clicking here.
